WORLD AIDS ORPHANS DAY CELEBRATION AND RELAUNCHING OF YELLOW RIBBON
The Society for Women and AIDS in Africa had funding from Hope for African Children Initiative, HACI Ghana to commemorate this year’s World AIDS Orphans Day which fell on 7th of May, 2006. The theme for the celebration was: Government and community support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children: Keeping the Promise.
The ceremony was held at the Coconut Groove Regency hotel in Accra. It brought together women groups, Churches, Children’s organizations, Positive groups, personnels from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Department of Women, National Commission on Children etc. The children were also drawn from two Positive groups and two orphanage homes namely, Women United Against AIDS in Ghana (WUAAG), Drama Network in Akosombo, Trinity Orphanage which is in Tutu Akuapem and Oscim Orphanage Missions in Elimina.
The Children took the invited guests through choreographies, poetry recitals and songs. Various prizes such as books, bags, etc were awarded to all the children who took part in the competition as well as the groups that came first and second from the competition.
The day was also used to relaunch the Yellow Ribbon, which had been on the low side since it was launched in 2005 by the first Lady Mrs. Theresa Kufuor. Mrs. Yaa Peprah Amekudzi, the Country Director of HACI Ghana relaunched the Yellow Ribbon.
Support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children With Regards To HIV/AIDS (0VC)
SWAA has carried out various advocacy campaigns on the plight of children orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, and the need to consider their welfare during policy formulation and implementation. SWAA has sensitized over 550 Assembly Members in four regions in Ghana, as well as decentralised agencies and community opinion leaders. There have also been advocacy meetings with parliamentary caucuses (Education, Gender and Children Caucuses). SWAA organized a one day training for 30 media personnel to sharpen their reporting skills on HIV/AIDS issues. Radio, TV sensitization workshops for District Assemblies were done. SWAA was also privileged to have an advocacy meeting with the First Lady of Ghana.
